Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
