Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in portions of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of materials that included little previously unseen data.
