Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
